At the beginning of the 20th century, the city of Lehrte decided to set up a central water supply due to long periods of drought and the drying out of springs and wells. The first attempts were inadequate, and so the 44.57 meter high water tower was built in 1912 for 40,000 marks. The elevated tank holds 250 cubic meters of water. The tower, which has been a listed building since 1985, was in service until 2003. Today it is considered a symbol of the city.
