The lock compensates for the height difference of around 8 meters between the Mittelland Canal and the higher Hildesheim branch canal. The original lock was built in 1926 and 1927. Due to the structural condition, the new lock was built between 2007 and 2012 as part of the expansion of the branch canal. The new lock chamber is longer (139 m instead of 82 m), but only slightly wider (12.5 m instead of 12.0 m). The old lock was preserved as a technical monument.

The old lock of the branch canal to Hildesheim was in operation from 1928 to 2012. Today the former lock basin is open and you can walk through it. The up-and-over doors are particularly impressive.
