There were several mills and the textile industry at the Mühlgraben. The weir was used to control the amount of water in the stream.

Basically it can be said that all pre-industrial development of the town of Plauen had its origins in the Mühlgraben. With the beginning of the technical revolution in the 18th century, these old craft guilds experienced their decline. With the invention of the steam engine, natural driving forces such as wind and water no longer had to be used.
