Niendorf is located in the northwest of Hamburg on the border with Schleswig-Holstein.

It covers an area of 12.7 square kilometers.

Eidelstedt and Schnelsen border it to the west, and Stellingen and Lokstedt border it to the south.

To the east, Niendorf is bordered by the airport in Fuhlsbüttel.

The center of Niendorf is the Tibarg. Retail, commercial, and catering businesses are concentrated in the former village street, now a pedestrian zone.

The district is predominantly residential and is largely built up with single-family and terraced houses; however, there are also apartment blocks and a high-rise housing estate in

Niendorf-Nord. The outskirts are primarily used for local recreation.

In addition to the Niendorfer Gehege and some allotment gardens, there are also agricultural areas. Niendorf's southern and western borders are formed by the Kollau River, which flows into the Tarpenbek River in Groß Borstel.

After heavy rainfall, the Kollau lowlands are regularly flooded.

Three large moors lay in the north: the Ohmoor, the Rahmoor, and the Schippelsmoor.

The areas were peat-extracted, cultivated, and built on in the 20th century.

Only small remnants of the Ohmoor remain.
