There's a lot of greenery in the middle of Hamburg. The Niendorfer Gehege is perfect for lovely walks and hikes. The paths lead through dense forest, past the Kollau and wide fields. There are small bridges and shady paths all along the way.

Niendorfer Gehege. Let's first work through the facts. 142 hectares of forest. On one side there are fields. And there's plenty of them. The Kollau flows all around. Sometimes as a river, often just as a stream. In the middle of the Niendorfer Gehege: a dog run, a forest café, a playground, a barbecue area, a pony farm including riding trails that are four kilometers long. There are also hiking trails. A total of 15 kilometers. Although you have to go quite a bit back and forth to cover a distance of this length. And then of course there is the second part that gives the area its name: the fallow deer enclosure. Here you can watch animals. And all of this in the middle of the big city! Because the Niendorfer Gehege isn't that far out. It took us just under 20 minutes by car from Altona. Public transport is just as fast. That alone is fantastic, of course. Every now and then there are small bridges that lead over the Kollau. My first impression of the forest and everything was great. This was mainly due to the fact that there was plenty of shade thanks to the trees. Sure, it's quite busy at the weekend, but somehow things are easier in Niendorf than on the Elbe. And once you leave the enclosure behind you and walk past the fields, you see fewer and fewer people. I also thought the fields were great. In the middle of Hamburg! There's something about having so much rural idyll in the big city.

Very beautiful, natural paths in the Niendorfer enclosure.
