The first evidence of the hospital mill, which originally belonged to the Markgröningen Holy Spirit Hospital, dates back to 1416. Tenants of hospital land, as well as anyone receiving crops from the hospital as payment in kind, were required to have milling done in this mill. However, the rents were too high and drove 22 millers into ruin over the next 130 years. The mill was completely destroyed during the Thirty Years' War. After several unsuccessful attempts by the municipal hospital administration, which had been in place since the Reformation, Hans Conrad Schell persuaded Schell to rebuild it in 1680. However, this failed due to the consequences of the French invasions and was soon lost. Several other millers followed in quick succession, but one after the other soon had to give up again due to the traditionally high taxes paid to the hospital administration. In 1817, the brothers Johann Michael and Ernst Gottfried Weizsäcker sold the mill to “Johann Georg Frick and his wife Katharina,” whose descendants have been able to maintain themselves as “Spitalmüller” to this day.
