Greifenstein Castle is one of the most famous mountain castles in the Frankenjura. The first mention was made in 1172. The core of the castle is medieval, but the outer shape was redesigned in 1683/93 according to plans by Leonard Dientzenhofer. It has been owned by the Counts Schenk von Stauffenberg since the end of the 17th century. It is worth visiting the extensive arms and antler collection of the Counts of Stauffenberg.

History of the castle:
Who originally built the castle is not known. In 1172, the name of the castle was mentioned for the first time with Eberhard de Grifenstein of the Schlüsselberg family.
Until their extinction in 1347, the key owners owned the castle. With the extinction of their successor, the Lords of Streitberg in 1690, the fief of the feudal lord, the Bishopric of Bamberg, fell back.
At the beginning of the 16th century, the castle was destroyed during the Peasants' War and then rebuilt. When relapsing to the Bishopric of Bamberg, she was dilapidated. Prince Bishop Marquard Sebastian Schenk von Stauffenberg had Greifenstein restored in the years 1691-1693 and transformed into a baroque palace under the direction of Leonhard Dientzenhofer.

Who would like to visit this castle should definitely participate in a guided tour. One might think that time stood still. The largest part, which one visits with a guidance, is unchanged since 1945. This makes a tour incredibly exciting, absolutely worth seeing.
