In the summer of 1665, the Black Death came to Eyam in a package of materials from London. Soon after the outbreak, the entire village decided to quarantine itself – a brave decision that ultimately stopped the disease from spreading beyond the village.
The boundary stone acted as a marker to separate residents of nearby Stoney Middleton from the plague-infected village of Eyam. These six holes drilled into the stone were filled with vinegar (believed to kill the infection) and money was deposited in them in exchange for food and other supplies from Stoney.

A great piece of history in the local area. An information board tells more about it.
