Feldkirch Cathedral is the most important Gothic church in Vorarlberg.
The name Feldkirch appears for the first time in the Churratian imperial surbar around the middle of the 9th century as “Feldkiricha” and “ad Feldkirichun”. Feldkirch was first mentioned as a town in 1218. The oldest church within the city walls was St. Johann.
We first learned about St. Nicholas Church in 1287; A letter of indulgence in 1297 gives information about the "ecclesia in honore sancti Nicolay apud Velkirche". In fact, structural analysis studies prove that, among other things: the lower floors of the church tower date back to this time. In 1348, 1398 and 1460 the church suffered severe fire damage, which was confirmed in recent excavations. During the last fire disaster, these must have been so large that the city's "lords and burghers" decided to build a new nave, which was vaulted in 1478.
Hans Sturn is mentioned in documents as the builder of the new nave. This agrees with the inscription that was uncovered on the nave vault during the restoration in 1961:
“MCCCLXXVIII Hanß Sturn Maister dis Buwes”.

Saint Nicholas, Bishop of Myra, to whom the cathedral (bishop's church, usually called "cathedral") in Feldkirch is dedicated, is - along with Saint Martin - probably one of the most popular saints of all. Almost every child in Germany - and far beyond - is probably familiar with his day of remembrance, December 6th.
On the eve of this day, the children used to put their shoes and boots in front of the door - which were of course cleaned with great care - so that Saint Nicholas could fill them with gifts during the night. In more agricultural areas, it was also customary for children to provide a small donation of food for the donkey, St. Nicholas' riding animal (according to another tradition, it was a gray horse).
