The Berganschnitt shows the structure of a basaltic ash and cinder cone with its crater. The left outer foot of the volcanic crater consists of alternating ash, lapilli and slag layers. The inner part of the crater also consists of ash and lapilli layers, which are separated from the layers of the substructure by a discordance or by an opposing layer collapse. A several meters thick basalt layer, which flooded the small crater as liquid lava, covers the sequence.
