Hiking Highlight
The Arensberg, also Arnulphusberg called, is a 561.3 m above sea level. NN high mountain of the volcanic Eifel. The former volcano is located near Zilsdorf in the Rhineland-Palatinate district Vulkaneifel.
The two proven outbreak phases of the tertiary stratovolcano took place about 24 to 32 million years ago. In modern times, the mountain was used as a quarry, during the extraction of finds from Roman and medieval times were discovered. You could enter through a short tunnel the interior of the quarry, which is located in the former vent of the volcano.
ATTENTION: Since the collapse of the tunnel 2018 the passage of the old quarry is closed. This should be consistent again until May, but until today - 22.5.2019 - nothing is repaired yet.

At the time (5/2019) the entrance into the vent of the volcano is blocked because of rockfall and broken rockfall protection - you could pass the barrier if you push aside the barbed wire sideways, but you have to know and answer for yourself. Let's hope that everything will be restored soon - too bad for the beautiful place inside the volcano

The Arensberg, also called Arnulphusberg, is 561.3 m above sea level. NHN high mountain of the Vulkaneifel. The former volcano is near Zilsdorf.
The tunnel-like entrance can be reached in a few minutes from a nearby car park. There is a large rock snail in the volcanic basin, but the edges are not only interesting for geologists. It's really impressive to be in here.

The tunnel is closed in July 2019. No redirection specified. We ended up running back.

Very nice quiet place, but maybe you shouldn't go here when there is snow
February 12, 2021
Very nice place that maybe shouldn't be accessible in the snow. There is a parking lot nearby, about 500m away, from where you can go there with a stroller.

Great! The way is worth it! However, you should not stay too close to the edge, as there is a risk of falling rocks
March 29, 2021
The roofing through the tunnel makes a solid impression and protects against falling rocks

A gem, unfortunately many let the "prohibition sign" deter them!

A tunnel leads into the interior of the old volcanic crater. Very interesting trail and geology. The rock inside was quarried in a quarry. Today it is a protected area.
