East Friesland through the back door. ;-) Beautiful scenic route, mostly away from traffic. It is one of the longest railway tracks in Germany. The entire route begins in Leer and ends after 69 kilometers in Bensersiel. The trail largely follows the former Jan Klein railway line.

East Frisia hiking trailoldest and longest hiking trailIn East Frisia, the flat, wide landscape, decorated with fen canals and windmills, awaits you. The route leads from the green inland to the beautiful coast. At 97 km, the East Frisia hiking trail is the longest and oldest hiking trail in East Frisia and leads along a former narrow-gauge railway line. The 24 artistically designed rubbing post sculptures that line the trail are a special hiking experience. Rubbing posts are usually placed in pastures so that cattle and horses can rub themselves against them. The idea of transforming such posts into art objects was born in Schleswig-Holstein in 1998. Gerd Neumann, former head of the vocational schools in Aurich, saw the posts and was impressed by them. The East Frisian hiking trail takes you across East Frisia: You hike from Rhauderfehn via Ihrhove-Westoverledingen, the town of Leer, Hesel, the town of Aurich, Esens to Bensersiel.
