A castle chapel is documented for the year 1232. The Reformation was introduced under Wilhelm von Stein in 1552. A small Gothic church outside the castle complex was consecrated in 1561. It was one of the first newly built Protestant places of worship. The dilapidation of the old church led to the construction of the new parish church, which was inaugurated on November 24, 1910 after around two years of construction. The neo-Romanesque, two-aisled hall church has a pitched roof and a recessed apse. In the northwest corner there is a 39 meter high church tower. On the west gallery there is an organ with 13 registers on two manuals and pedal. The instrument was set up by the Nuremberg organ builder Strebel.

When entering the hall church of Altenstein, built in the Romanesque style, the visitor's gaze is inevitably drawn to the two huge wheel chandeliers that hang from the ceiling. They are magnificently designed, which is entirely appropriate to their symbolic meaning: They are intended as a sign of the heavenly Jerusalem that will come down to earth at the end of time. The biblical model can be found in Chapter 21 of the "Revelation of John" (also called the "Apocalypse"), the last book of the New Testament.
