The medieval lighthouse of Lindau, over 800 years old.

“To protect and defend the seaport – a powerful symbol of the former free imperial city of Lindau,” is what it says on the wall of the building. Imposingly 20 meters high and equipped with embrasures, the tower was once surrounded by water - a perfect observation post at the end of the city wall, which also included the two neighboring towers of the Fischerviertel, the Petersturm and the Diebsturm.

Only when Lindau's new lighthouse was completed in 1856 did the Mangturm lose its function as a signal and observation post. It was increased by one storey and covered with the distinctive, glazed tiles

The Mangenturm - as the inscription next to the door says - or Mangturm is one of the older lighthouses on the lake. The five-story tower (excluding attics) with a height of 20 m has a square cross-section and a cantilevered upper floor. From 1180 to 1856 it operated as a lighthouse; At the same time, it was the end point of the city wall and the starting point of the wall, which included the Diebsturm, which was built around 1370/1380 after the old land was filled in, and ran up to the northwestern corner tower (Looserturm), which was preserved in the foundation area. The name is derived from the Cloth and Manghaus that used to be nearby, which is why it is usually called the Mangturm. When the new Lindau lighthouse was completed in 1856, the Mangturm lost its function as a signal and observation tower.

The Mangturm with its pointed, colorfully glazed brick helmet from the 19th century is located on the harbor's lakeside promenade and until the 19th century could only be reached via a drawbridge.
