History:

The fortifications that once stood here were called "Burg" or "Auf Burg". That doesn't really tell you much, after all the Roman rampart was its own island - one of three in Lindau's Lake Constance, alongside the main island and the Hintere Insel. It was only through embankments in the middle of the 19th century that these were connected. The name "Römerschanze" caught on at the beginning of the century - when Lindau began to change fundamentally.
