    Baroque churches and palaces, chic boutiques, fine department stores and nice sidewalk cafes line Via Etnea in the historic center of Catania.
    After a volcanic eruption raged in 1669 and an earthquake in 1693 destroyed Catania, in the 18th century the architect Giovanni Battista Vaccarini shaped a new image of the city of Catania. Already at this time the Via Etnea received the character of an elegant promenade. The main street, then called Via Uzeda, became the center of commercial and cultural activity.
