Tips

  • The small cemetery, which is located on a gentle slope, has existed since 1853. Numerous personalities from the imperial era are buried here in magnificent burial places. In the Nazi era, the cemetery was to be abandoned according to the plans for the world capital Germania and indeed were around 1938 in the northern third of several graves exhumed and reduced the cemetery - due to the start of the war, the other plans but fizzled. Today you can admire the impressive burial grounds and the especially picturesque cemetery chapel.

  • The cemetery belongs to the Twelve Apostles community in Berlin-Schöneberg. Since 2008 there has been the »Garden of the Star Children« in the Old St. Matthew Cemetery. The term "star children" is a loving term for breastfeeding or miscarriage children. For all relatives, but especially for the parents, the death of an unborn life represents an extraordinary, often very stressful life situation. With the »Garden of Star Children« a place of mourning has been created for the parents. They are given the opportunity to bury their child in a dignified manner.Further information at: zwoelf-apostel-berlin.de/page/3969/garten-der-sternenkinder

  • The Old St. Matthew's Cemetery in Berlin is a historic cemetery in Berlin with many culturally and historically significant gravestones that are listed. The cemetery is located between Großgörschenstrasse and Monumentenstrasse in the Schöneberg district on the so-called Red Island. The cemetery is located on the northern slope of the Teltow and (like the Kreuzberg, which is 50 metres further east) slopes gently down to the Berlin glacial valley, through which the Spree flows.
Gravesites that are definitely worth seeing.
