An inn at the “end of the world”.

The history of the Carpathians - one of the oldest inns in Wuppertal!

It was built on the Katernberg in the late eighteenth century and there is evidence that it was run as a pub by Willhelm Thüner, born in 1791, as early as 1836.

In 1855 Friedrich Bertram and his wife Caroline, née Thüner, took over the house and bar. The name "Carpathians" also comes from this time.

Construction workers who widened the dirt road leading to the restaurant to the street regularly spent their lunch breaks in the restaurant. Since the house and the street were far from the city, one day one of them coined the saying: “Here we are as in the Carpathian Mountains”.

This is how the "Carpathians" got their name.

The Bertram family owned the house and restaurant for over three generations

1936 Alfred Holthaus took over the regiment by marriage.

In 1959 the "changing of the guard" was carried out by his son Alfred and his wife Trude. Thanks to Trude's down-to-earth cuisine and Alfred's extraordinary manner behind the tap, the Carpathians became known beyond the borders of Wuppertal in the years that followed. Business people, artists, politicians and journalists were always happy to meet here. Former Federal President Rau, himself a Katernberger, was a regular guest for 35 years and was on friendly terms with the Holthaus family.

From 1994 to 2007 son Stefan ran the traditional house in the seventh generation. In the same year, regular guests bought the Carpathians in order to restore and preserve this gem on the Katernberg.

This lovely, cosy restaurant is hidden away in the middle of a residential area. The food is delicious and there is also a reasonably priced meal available at lunchtime.

In summer, guests can also sit outside in the beer garden.
