A Benedictine monastery, first mentioned in documents in 1235, was probably built on the present site of the church at the end of the 12th century. During the Reformation it was destroyed by the Hussites in 1429, along with the city. After the remains of the monastery were demolished in 1860, a new church was built according to plans by the Frankfurt architect Emil Flaminius, which was inaugurated in 1862. The church was badly damaged in World War II and for many years was only provisionally secured. It was not until 1990 that the roof received a new cladding made of copper sheeting. The last restoration took place in 2003.
