The Rupertus fountain is located on Rupertusplatz, created in 1914 by the Munich sculptor Valentin Kraus. The figure represents Saint Rupertus, the founder of the Salzburg diocese. Not only this square is named after Salzburg's patron saint, but the entire region: the Rupertuswinkel.
This was the center of the city in the 13th and 14th centuries, before the development expanded southwards to today's Marienplatz and beyond. The street forks here. One leads through the lower city gate to the Salzach, the other to the parish church. The blocks of houses surrounding the square were formerly owned by the noble shipowners who were involved in the salt trade and formed the city's patriciate. Several richly decorated Gothic stone portals still bear witness to the financial power of the former house owners.
