The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption (Santander) is located very close to the sea and its appearance is very austere if we compare it with others of the time.

The history of the cathedral dates back to the times when Santander was granted the status of jurisdiction in 1187, under the tutelage of the abbot of its church, this meant a great economic boost for the town with which the cathedral could be built and the castle, which was later called Puebla Vieja, as well as walls that defended the busy port and its inhabitants.

In the historic city center of Santander is the cathedral, which is likely the city's most famous structure. It was rebuilt after the two-day major fire in 1941 on the saved 12th-century crypt. The Gothic structure represents the city's landmark. It is significantly simpler than many other cathedrals in Spain, but it is precisely this fact that makes it very attractive for a visit. Among other things, the remains of Saints Emeterius and Celedonis can be seen in the Cathedral of Santander. They represent a sanctuary of the patron saints. The church is open daily for its guests.
