The Plaza de Velarde, better known as La Plaza Porticada, emerged after the reconstruction of the city after the fire that devastated Santander in 1941.
Built in the Neo-Herrera style and located in front of the Post Office building, right in the center, it can be said that it is the most emblematic square in the city and that it serves as the main square, where there are several important buildings: The Delegation Government of Cantabria, Treasury, Military Government and Caja Cantabria (with two huge bronze sculptures).

In 2006, the square was redesigned and then declared a pedestrian zone. During the renovation work, archaeological remains from antiquity were also found.
