The Chaff Bridge was completed in 1408 as part of the city fortifications. Between 1626 and 1635 Kaspar Meglinger added 67 panels depicting a dance of death cycle.

Why is this bridge named Spreuerbrücke?

Only from this bridge of the city in the Middle Ages chaff was thrown into the Reuss.
Right next to it was the Bäckerquartier.

Hiking

The name of the bridge has been preserved because the chaff from the nearby town mills was poured over the edge of the bridge into the Reuss. The Spreuerbrücke was completed in 1408 as part of the city fortification. The south wing of the bridge was built in 1408 and is after the fire of the Chapel Bridge, the oldest surviving wooden bridge in Switzerland. The north wing was built at the beginning of the 19th century. The bridge contains 67 panels depicting the Dance of Death.
