In the same square as Milan's La Scala theatre, there is this impressive monument in memory of the Italian genius Leonardo Da Vinci, who lent his wisdom during the construction of the city's cathedral. Leonardo also lived in the city for many years of his life and, as stated on the foot of the statue, it was made on "September 4, 1872."

The Leonardo da Vinci Monument is a monument erected in Milan in 1872, dedicated to the painter and polymath Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519), depicting him as a larger than life statue created by the sculptor Pietro Magni.
The memorial consists of five white marble statues standing on an octagonal granite base approximately 7.0 meters high. The name "Leonardo" is engraved on the front and "Pietro Magni" on the back of the base.
The central statue, about 4.4 meters high, shows Leonardo da Vinci. He is depicted with a thoughtful expression on his face, wearing a long cloak and with his arms folded across his chest.
On all four corners of the base, below the statue of Leonardo da Vinci, are four of his pupils, namely Giovanni Antonio Boltraffio, Marco d'Oggiono, Cesare da Sesto and Gian Giacomo Caprotti (under the name of di Andrea Salaino) in ca. 2.6 meter high figures.

Visitors to Milan will find an imposing monument here, showing Leonardo da VINCI (1452 to 1519) and four of his students. He was known throughout his life for his extremely diverse fields of interest and is considered one of the greatest polymaths of that epoch, who was involved in the various arts (especially painting, sculpture and architecture) as well as with scientific research (e.g. anatomy).
