In the Middle Ages, an official resided here, who from 1417 also held the office of district clerk in a personal union. From the 16th century, it served as the seat of a district registrar. It was also a temporary residence of the Archbishops of Mainz. The castle was gradually expanded, particularly in the 15th century, by Elector-Archbishop Dietrich Schenk von Erbach, who frequently stayed at the castle and issued documents there. The fortified sections were demolished in 1803. Today, it is owned by the town of Gau-Algesheim.
