The castle ruin Liebenstein (near Arnstadt) is certainly not as well known as the three peers, but for Burgenammler a nice piece in the collection. Built in the 13th century by the Counts of Schwarzburg-Käfernburg, it still shows itself quite stately today and is used by a Liebensteiner association for festivities. The interior of the castle is also freely accessible.

The castle was probably built by the Käfernburgers in the 12th century. The first lords of the castle were the ministerial lords of Liebenstein before the castle fell to the Ludowingers in 1369. In 1434 the Lords of Witzleben became the owners of the castle, which they expanded into a residential palace in the middle of the 16th century. Later the complex slowly fell into disrepair and served as a quarry for the villagers (Wikipedia).
