It was created in the 1870s by Moritz Ziller (1838–1895), the older brother of the two Ziller brothers, as a decorative square and decorated with a victory column made by Ernst March.
Since 2002, the square has borne the name of the former resident naturopath Eduard Bilz (1842–1922).
