Mechower Holz was formerly heavily used for forestry purposes. In the meantime, it has been taken out of use and can develop permanently without human intervention. The forest is dominated by deciduous trees. Some areas on which formerly coniferous trees faltered are taken by Pionierwald. In moist valleys and the Bachtal grow moist forests. The nature reserve is only accessible on the western edge of Mechower Holz and on the western and southern edges of hiking trails. A path running through the Mechow wood is closed to protect the breeding birds from early February to mid-June of each year.
