The many small boundary stones with crossed bishop's crosiers (as in the city's coat of arms) mark the boundaries of the Bischofswerda city forest and were erected in the 18th century. The stones are currently maintained by the forestry department.

These boundary stones also stand on the historical border between the former Diocese of Meissen and what was then Bohemian Upper Lusatia. In the first Upper Lusatian border charter of 1241, the border was established between Bishop Bruno and King Wenceslas I at the Königstein. However, this border was not yet marked by boundary stones at that time.
