When the train of the revolutionary Friedrich Hecker with 800 volunteers came to the city on April 18, 1848, the townspeople were anything but enthusiastic.Their leader, Hecker, gave a speech on the town hall balcony to spur the revolutionary zeal of the residents.

A huge work of art on the market square is reminiscent of the small Baden revolution from 1848, which only two citizens and a dog from Schopfheim joined.
