This is a rare, accidentally grown variety (mutation) of the native English oak (Ouercus ruhur). Its sinuous, slit leaves are typical.
The occurrence of a fern oak was first documented in 1855 in southern Germany and in 1864 in France.
It cannot be propagated by seed.
Around 1920, a fern oak cutting was grafted onto the English oak at this location. The graft bulge is still visible.
However, the origin of the cutting and who carried out the planting can no longer be determined."
