The 875 m long bridge, completed in 1995, was used in 1996 as a temporary bridge with two lanes for the general renovation of the north bridge and then opened for pedestrian and bicycle traffic. The footbridge was designed by the Viennese architect Johann Georg Gsteu and named in 2009 after world chess champion Wilhelm Steinitz, in whose honor an explanatory board was placed on the bridge on the 110th anniversary of his death in the summer of 2010.
