Hainrode was first mentioned in a document on January 8, 1349. On January 1, 2010, the communities of Hainrode, Bennungen, Breitenstein, Breitungen, Dietersdorf, Drebsdorf, Hayn (Harz), Kleinleinungen, Questenberg, Roßla, Rottleberode, Schwenda and Uftrungen merged to form the new community of Südharz.

The village is also known for its broom making tradition. A giant broom was made for the 650th anniversary and can now be admired in the village center.
