The North Canal, Napoléon's century project to connect the Meuse with the Rhine, remained unfinished when the peace pact was signed with Holland and England. Only sections of the canal from Neuss to Neersen and from Nederweert to Beringe / Helden were built.
The north canal from the Kovermühle to the Louisenburg lock is heavily overgrown with little water or is just a river bed without water. I did not see how the north channel is fed with water in this area, probably from groundwater and rain. From the Kovermühle, the North Canal and the Nette flow parallel to each other for about 3 km to the Krickenbeck Lakes, a nature reserve. The north canal north of the Krickenbeck lakes up to the Louisenburg lock is mostly just a river bed with a hint of the canal. Some farmers use the river bed to keep their animals, such as sheep 🐑 and chickens 🐔.

The North Canal was an ambitious Napoleon project to connect the North Sea with the Meuse and the Rhine. After a short time, however, the construction was stopped again, so that only parts of the building were completed. Here at Hinsbeck you can visit a section.
