The information board next to a high memorial stone tells an exciting, true story: about a successful lawsuit by the municipality of Hardenburg against the Bavarian state, about a subsequent "generous renunciation" by the Hardenburg citizens (who would still give up 2 years' salary for the benefit of their village community today?) and about the origin of the Hardenburg Forest Festival in 1865, which has been celebrated annually on December 28 ever since. (The memorial stone next to it dates from 1985 (on the occasion of the 120th Hardenburg Forest Festival).
