The Evangelical City Church has its origins in a medieval predecessor building. In the meantime, the church was also used as a dual church. A wall was specially built inside to separate the denominations.
The church took on its current form around 1800 after the building had suffered severe damage, fires and fallen into ruin.

In the center of the city stands the now Protestant town church with its 37-meter-high bell tower.
Around the year 1500 it had to make way for a new building. With the change of denomination under the Electorate of the Palatinate, the church was first converted to Lutheran and then to Reformed. This did not last very long. In the course of a return to Catholicism, Elector Johann Wilhelm ordered the division of churches in 1705. As a result, the Catholics celebrated their services in the choir area, separated by a shield wall from the nave, where the Reformed could gather. In the 1780s, the church was rebuilt because it had become dilapidated.
