Best Hikes to Geltinger Birk Nature Reserve

Tips

  • The entire Geltinger Birk is absolutely worth seeing and beautiful in every season.
In my opinion, a must if you are on a fishing vacation. When the weather is nice, it is a bit more frequented, which works out well given the size of the area. Only the way up towards Birknack is mostly fairly well-known.
When I was there in March it was a cloudy and very calm day. The winter still had the Birk firmly under control. No green, no blue bathing sky. There was still ice everywhere on the little pools. No wind, just low-hanging clouds and a bit hazy. Occasionally a few hikers on the horizon and a few Koniks or Highland cattle in the meadows. As always, the water birds spectacular over the tranquil landscape. I like the Birk in the cold season and the calm it exudes, even when you don't have a distant view of the Baltic Sea. The ambient noises become quieter and you can slow down and drive down a gear.
Dogs are essential! to leash. There are always dog owners who let their dogs run unleashed in the NSG, visitors who don't stay on the paths and run around on the beach. This has meanwhile led to considerations to close the Birk for visitors with dogs or in principle for everyone. geltinger-birk.de/infobörse-1
An appeal to all of you: stick to the obligation to keep a leash, stay on the paths and don't run around on the beach so that we can all continue to visit the beautiful Birk.

  • The Gelting Bay used to be an arm of the Baltic Sea. Then this was dyked and the resulting lagoon was pumped out, just with Lotte. Until 1971, nature conservation took precedence over agriculture and everything went into decline: clean water, this is how the valuable salt marshes are now created. But they are still 1.30 meters below sea level.
