For centuries in the county of Bentheim it was a privilege of the counts or princes to use the power of wind and water. So only they were allowed to build mills and collect leases. It was the same with the Princely Mill in Schüttorf, which probably originated in the 14th century on the Vechte. It may have been a little earlier, but definitely not before 1295, the year the city rights were conferred.
The mill stands on the Neue Vechte, an artificial river that was only excavated in connection with the city fortifications.
In the beginning there was only one rye mill on the left bank of the Vechte in a building made of sandstone. Later, on the opposite side, a whole mill center was built, with an oil mill, a tan mill (in which dried oak bark was crushed for the tanners) and a sawmill. Unfortunately, this system was completely destroyed in a fire in 1928. A sketch by the Dutch landscape painter Jacob van Ruisdael (1628-1682) from around 1650 with the title "Drie Watermolen" made this plant in Schüttorf immortal. The Princely Grain Mill on the left bank of the Vechte, which still exists today, was rebuilt in 1914. It is a three-storey brick building with arched windows and a high hipped roof. The technical equipment includes two grinding steps and a device for bagging the crushed grain. The bridge and the reservoirs made of sandstone blocks are also listed buildings.

A very nice big mill. Today there is a dental practice in the building. From the outside, however, very descriptive and well renovated. A place directly above the mill basin full of water lilies is also nice.
