The bistal is located in the hamlet of Hamburg, between Sachsenwald and Elbe, about five kilometers southeast of Hamburg between the district of HH-Bergedorf and the city of Geesthacht. It belongs to the communities Escheburg and Kröppelshagen (with the district Fahrendorf). In the north it turns into a forest area, the foothills of the Sachsenwald. With a height of approx. 50 meters above the flat marshland, it is part of the densely wooded Geest slope, which represented the northern bank of the Elbe glacial valley.

The valley crossed by a stream today was formed around 15,000 to 80,000 years ago. At this time, namely the Vistula Ice Age, the glaciers from the north in the area of today's Holstein had come to a standstill.

The water masses of the melting glaciers dug their way to the Elbe glacial valley deep into the earth. The result was a 20-40 meter deep erosion gorge, which invites its visitors to hike, walk, cycle, explore and of course to linger.

The Bistal is the smaller brother of the Dalbekschlucht. Here it is much quieter and less developed.
