The building was built in 1601 by Mads Lerche, who was then mayor, councilor, merchant and customs officer. The courtyard was one of the few buildings that survived the great fire of 1797. The museum was merged with the Kerteminde Museum under the name Østfyns Museer in 2009 and now houses the local history collection of the museum from Nyborg and the surrounding area.

Borgmestergården in Nyborg is a well-preserved old grocery farm from 1601 (the Renaissance). Today it houses the city's museum which is open daily, and has lots of activities for children and adults throughout the year; Eg. in Easter, winter holidays and autumn holidays.
