At the top of the cross shaft is a plaque bearing the inscription INRI = Iesus Nazarenus Rex Judaeorum, Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews. A skull is attached to the base of the cross. '[...] The meaning is: Through the cross, death is conquered and all people have risen to eternal life.' (Menzel, 1854).
