The success story of Montafonerbahn AG began in 1905, as the first electrically operated standard gauge railway in the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. But the Montafonerbahn does not only look back on a long history as a transport company. From the very beginning, the company played a central role as an energy supplier with its own power plant, from which the electrical trade and installation business areas developed. In recent years, the Montafonerbahn has transformed into a versatile service company that now combines the areas of energy, transport, trade and media under the group name "mbs" and is firmly anchored in the region with its over 100 employees. In total, the mbs group currently employs around 200 people.
Long tradition - In 1890, the Montafon's professional association made the first decisions to build the Montafonerbahn. 15 years later, in 1905, the approximately 13-kilometer-long local railway from Schruns to Bludenz was opened. The Montafonerbahn was initially operated by the Imperial and Royal State Railway Directorate in Innsbruck, but in 1926 the Austrian Federal Railways took over the company's own operations. The electricity for the railway operation was supplied by the power station on the Litzbach in Schruns, which was bought from the mill owners Robert and Wilhelm Mayer in 1904. In the first few years, the rail network was repeatedly affected by flooding and railway operations were interrupted. But the Montafon Railway withstood both natural disasters and the turmoil of two world wars. It was constantly modernized, new station buildings were built and the range of services for travelers was expanded.
