Designed by the architect Giovanbattista Lantana, the New Cathedral, built from 1604 on the remains of the ancient Basilica of San Pietro dei Domi, rises majestically in the center of the square. Boasting a magnificent Baroque façade made of Botticino marble, it boasts a rather unique history: due to a delay in construction due to financial difficulties, the cathedral was not completed until 1825, with the construction of its dome, the third-highest in Italy.

A visit to the church's interior is a must. The large cathedral is not only formally a national monument, but also a beauty with its high dome, main altar, and various side altars. Pope Paul VI was a native of Brescia—a special section in the north aisle was dedicated to him.
