A part of the liberation route runs over this part of our walk and is part of the Polar Bear cycling route. This route is 32 km long and takes you past several monuments and memorial sites related to World War II.
On this part you only pass a Bailey bridge.
The route is signposted with black and yellow polar bears on the road surface. Why a polar bear as a marker? The soldiers who liberated Wuustwezel and the north of Antwerp were British from the 49th (West Riding) Infantry Division and they had a polar bear as a symbol.Just stand still for a moment or while musing on stepping or pedaling over the heroes of yesteryear. They have also traveled this route fighting for our freedom, which we can enjoy to the fullest.
