At the end of the 18th and early 19th century, neo-gothic foils were the fashion trend in English landscape gardens. Building so-called ruins was a costly undertaking for many aristocrats. The fortune of Baron Jean-Michel Van Havre successfully withstood the construction of this gatehouse in 1830. When Charles Van Der Straeten, the king's architect in Brussels, was entrusted with the beautification of the De Mik castle, the Austrian Petersen was commissioned to recreate the domain with imported exotic trees, another foil of the beau monde in an English landscape garden. Woods, lawns, water features and statues made the owner dream away. A gate in iron millstone was supposed to protect those dreams from a threatening outside world. The gatehouse was an imitation of the military Porte D'Auron in the northern French city of Bourges. The original French copy was demolished at the beginning of the 20th century. In Brasschaat, the curiosity of destruction was spared.

The Torenpoort is an artificial gate from 1830.

It was then an added value in the English landscape park

The gate is said to be a copy of a city gate from Bourges in France.
