The primeval sequoia (Metasequoia glyptostroboides), also called Chinese redwood, metasequoie or water fir, is considered a living fossil. It was only discovered in 1941 in an inaccessible mountain region in the Sichuan and Hubei regions of the People's Republic of China and was previously only known from fossil finds. It is the only recent species in the genus Metasequoia.
