There is now a wonderful cycling and hiking path along the route of the former towing railway. The towing railways were used until the 1940s to pull Berlin barges through the canal from the bank. This avoided motorized ships that would have damaged the banks of the narrow canal.

Hiking

The 38 km long Teltowkanalweg connects the Griebnitzsee with the Dahme in the south of Berlin. The navigable canal, which was built in just six years, was intended to shorten the waterway between the Oder and the Elbe around 1900. With the construction of the Teltowkanal, many smaller streams disappeared at the time, as their beds were used for the canal's course.
The path is designed continuously for hikers and mostly also for cyclists.
