The origin of the church is said to date back to 1247.
The chronicle reports on repeated destruction by fires and acts of war, as a result of which it was repeatedly rebuilt, expanded or rebuilt. The current form in the neo-Gothic style was built in the years 1873/74 and has essentially been preserved in its original form.

This Werneuchen church is dedicated to the Archangel Michael, the name (coming from Hebrew) means "Who is like God?". He is often depicted - on paintings or as a statue - with a flaming sword or lance. Michael is - together with Raphael, Gabriel and Uriel - one of the four archangels who (according to human imagination) occupy the highest rank in the heavenly hierarchy of angelic beings. Their common feast day in the saints calendar is September 29th.

The partnership between the Protestant parishes of Werneuchen and Kettwig was "revived" in 1988. If you are in the beautiful and worth seeing Kettwig you can see a sign to Werneuchen at the church there.
