The Nieuwe Bossen were one of the first forests to be planted in the 19th century on the heathland north of Turnhout. The Peerdsven is also part of this: a fen, through which horses used to be led to collect leeches for medicinal use. With its characteristic lanes and alternation of forests and flowery verges, De Nieuwe Bossen is an attractive walking area.
