The historic Art Nouveau waterworks is closely linked to the history of the Frankfurt school camp Wegscheide. The water supply there has since been organized differently, so the future of the building is surrounded by some question marks. In any case, it is an impressive and listed building, and Mernese residents are also committed to preserving it.

The Mernes Waterworks is an Art Nouveau industrial monument dating from 1913/14. Inside, machinery, motors, pumps, and tools from its construction period are still preserved, although they are no longer in use. The waterworks was originally built to supply the military training area at Wegscheide. The contract concluded between the then mayor of Mernes, Hieronymus König, and the military administration in 1913 stipulated that, in return for supplying the barracks, the community of Mernes would be provided with free drinking water. This contract has never been rescinded and is therefore still in effect. The waterworks is currently owned by the city of Bad Orb, and leased by the city of Frankfurt, the owner of the Wegscheide site. Today, the facility supplies the school camp at Wegscheide. The waterworks is in need of renovation and no longer meets current technical and hygiene standards. A local support association is attempting to raise funds to preserve its existence.
